A Superman Will Rise, a review of Smallville’s “Salvation”

There are few things better than expectations being surpassed. Smallville, for possibly the first time in nine years, didn’t just surpass expectations with its finale, but it shattered them. Words like epic, iconic, and legendary can be thrown around too easily. I’ve been guilty of using such terminology when it perhaps wasn’t warranted.

The Ultimate Penultimate, a review of Smallville’s “Hostage”

I almost want to start this review of Smallville’s penultimate episode, “Hostage,” with “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” because, in many ways, it really was. It was the sort of episode that had some of the highest highs while also intending to break your heart. “Hostage” not only featured the returns of Martha Kent and Perry White, the revelation of who the Red Queen was, and a journalistic team up for Lane and White, but it also crushed hearts by breaking up Lois and Clark and revealing what the possible and devastating consequences of using of this season’s Maguffin, the Book of Rao, could be.

Of Old Foes and New Friends, a Review of Smallville’s “Upgrade.”

What a difference a week makes. After the rock ‘em, sock ‘em action adventure pyrotechnics in “Checkmate,” Smallville returned to its stellar Season 9 form on Friday night with the return of Metallo (and red Kryptonite) in “Upgrade.” Certainly not lacking in action sequences (which director Michael Rohl wisely decided not to shoot in extreme slow motion), “Upgrade” was more of an examination of character than an attempt to simply appear cool with fancy special effects and kitschy dialogue.
